Punctuation in Social Media Matters…Really!

Did you know that the deciding factor in whether or not people click on your posts on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter can come down to what punctuation you use?  If you want that awesome post or video you just wrote to be seen and shared, you better not use a question mark in your post title!

Sure there are other factors at play such as the day of the week you post, what time and even how many words are in your post, but one of the single most important factors in whether they click on your post or not comes down to the punctuation you use.  As I discovered recently thanks to the folks at Compendium, punctuation in social media matters.  So do hashtags (#).

If you want to learn what works best for social sharing, you need to check out the infographic that they recently created. Pay particularly close attention to the differences between B2B vs B2C:

I must admit that I didn’t know about the importance of punctuation in social media. After learning about it this morning I went back and checked the analytics of several of my recent posts and found that the posts with question marks were clicked and shared much less than the ones without! I guess I won’t be asking too many questions from now on. ;-)

This is indeed quite interesting, and a considerable difference (especially in Twitter! lol). You are always sharing useful things – Thanks for posting this!

Just listened to your podcast and went to this post you referenced. Wow, unbelievable! Oops, I guess I should stop those exclamation points. Thanks for sharing this with us :)

I hope smiley faces are still ok.
